Stony Brook University has a Research and Development Park next to its main campus. The university also owns the Stony Brook University Medical Center and co-manages the Brookhaven National Laboratory under contract with the authority of the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Honors College provides a special curriculum for honors students. Students in the small and highly selective seminar-based program receive the individual attention typically found in small liberal arts colleges and have access to a broad range of academic opportunities typically available at a major research university.
