Did you ever stop to think about the importance of design in your life?
From the moment you wake up in the morning until you go to sleep at night, you are working and playing within an environment largely built by human hands—an environment that has been specially designed by someone for your benefit. We all live in a designed world.
Think about it: All the stuff around you did not make itself! Somebody had to plan it and pay for it and build it. Therefore, it all serves some purpose.
The purpose of the designer may have been to make your life more convenient. Or, it may have been to make your environment more visually appealing or exciting. Or—let’s face it—it may have been to sell you something. Designers have to live, too!
Who are these designers—these creators of the designed world we all live in?
They are people like engineers, architects, artists, and others who specialize in making things for other people to use, or just to enjoy looking at.
There is one type of person, in particular, who contributes greatly to the designed world nowadays more than ever before—the graphic designer.
A graphic designer is a kind of artist who specializes in helping to make the products we buy, the entertainment we watch, and the visual world that surrounds us more attractive and stimulating. And often, yes, the reason he or she does this is to sell us something.
Where do these graphic designers come from? How does someone get to be a graphic designer?
By preparing yourself to enter the world of design. What do I mean by that?
Just that there are a wide range of institutions—from art colleges to artists’ collectives to advertising agencies to the art departments of other types of commercial enterprises—devoted to studying the basic principles of good design, and teaching them to others so they too may contribute to making the designed world more beautiful and exciting.
Do you have artistic talent? Do you want to develop it as far as it will take you? Do you want to enter the world of design in order to make your contribution to the designed world?
